Sorry, Rodger, I am one of the miscreants you (quite properly) fingered.
To make amends:
I received and reviewed the plans, and was suitably impressed with the
relative ease with which a powerful instrument could be constructed.
However, the grind-your-own-mirror section stopped me, so I checked
around for a source for a ready-made reflector. The SM is a Naval
Academy physics instuctor, and has a catalogue that he's been trying to
get to me for a month or so. When I get it, I hope to begin the project
over the winter. I'll let you know how it progresses.

I suspect that this may be a common problem, so I shall take the liberty
of posting my reply to you to SCOUTS-L.
For ready-made Newtonian reflector telescope primary lenses, try the Orion

I hope this will help you get going. If you can do so, try to find somebody
who makes telescopes and grinds his or her own mirrors in your area. The
rough grinding is quite straightforward, as is the medium and fine
grinding. It is only in the polishing and figuring the curve of the mirror
that you'll really need some help.
If you can do this, it will save you quite a bit of money, as the
approximate prices for mirror grinding kits are:
10" $200 |\
8" $140 |----- Includes shipping and handling
6" $90 |/
To this, add about $40 for aluminizing, including shipping and handling.
Let me know how you are progressing.
