Sometimes you just have to wing it. Our last duty station was at NAWC
Patuxent River and my husband, son and I were all active in the troop
sponsored by the base. Had a meeting room in the basement of the education
building until the end of the second year we were there. Safety did the
annual inspection and shut down the room because with reconstrcution going
on the lagging around the pipes near the ceiling were splitting (lots of
asbestos), only one exit (going up the stairs since it was the basement)
and combustibles (not gas or fuel mind you, but things like wooden tables,
chuck boxes and the like, HUH?) in the storage room. We were inspected on
Monday afternoon, met on Tuesdays. Meeting that week was cancelled. Went
to the chain of command to request a new meeting place and got told no way.
Two troops sponsored by non-military activities could meet on the base but
we had to go looking for somewhere else. Met at the SM's house on base alot
and during good weather at the troop campground (also on base). After
about five months, we did get to start meeting in the base chapel, but it
took a lot of work, discussions and just plan frustrations.
On possible sponsoring organizations, try the local zoo, county parks or
something else in that catagory.
Good luck. YIS,
