We have dealt with this before by taking a battery operated table lamp,
like used in some small campers, and replacing the bulb with one that
made for a higher voltage. This way the lamp doesn't put out as much
light and the batteries will last longer. The boy eventually out grew
his nightmares and quit using the light on his own, but it helped keep
him in scouting and eventually he made Eagle.
