The lobby of The Mirage in Las Vegas.
I had previously written off-list, but since this is becoming a popular
thread I thought I should contribute... <g>
I was in Las Vegas on business. I had arranged to meet a member (former
member?), Dave McCullough, of this list for dinner and then visit his
chapter meeting. We had agreed to meet in the lobby of The Mirage (where I
For those not familiar with this hotel... The Mirage has a rather lodge
lobby filled with tropical plantings (an understatement) that leads right
into the gaming area. At the front, near the entrance is a large statue (of
a mermaid, if I remember correctly) that has become a meeting place. That
was where we were to meet.
It was "cool" that day, being only the early part of March, and I was a bit
self-conscious about wearing the uniform in a casino, so I wore a
light jacket over my uniform. I had hoped I would still be conspicuous
enough to be recognized. We had never met before. Dave was standing next to
me for several minutes until I finally had the nerve to ask him if he was
Dave McCullough. You see, he was not in uniform (but had described to me
what he would be wearing) and had not recognized that I *was* in uniform due
to the jacket and the general dim lighting in the lobby.
We had a great dinner. I got to attend his chapter meeting and the
following night we met again so I could visit his troop. Yes, I went to Las
Vegas, not to gamble, but to attend Boy Scout meetings!
