If your troop is in Central Texas, you might want to consider a campout
during which your Scouts earn the Horsemanship Merit Badge in a program
sponsored by the Heart O' Texas Council at Camp Tahuaya. The program is
operated during the months of February to May and September to December.
The program takes place at the LAY-Z River Ranch, located adjacent to
Camp Tahuaya. The cost is $20 per rider. Troops furnish their own
tents and food. The Horsemanship activities begin at 9 p.m. on Friday
night with a short briefing about the weekend's activities and end
around noon on Sunday.
To make arrangements, contact Neil Carr, the Camp Tahuaya Ranger, at
254-947-5525. My recomendation is that you try and reserve the Huaco
Campsite as it is adjacent to the barn and pavilion where the merit
badge activities will take place. Once your weekend is booked with
Neil, contact Melvina Mitchell at the LAY-Z River Ranch at 254-947-8059
to let her know how many riders you will bring.
Camp Tahuaya is near Belton, Texas, about 1 1/2 miles west of I-35.

Our troop had 30 riders (26 boys & 4 adults) in the program this past
weekend and really enjoyed the activities. Several of our riders were
preparing for a 1998 Philmont Horse Cavalcade and the folks at the ranch
spent extra time with them.
