Our Council just joined a test program to take electronic finger prints and do
a background check on all Adult leaders. It was just announced in our council
news letter. I agree with the plan and understand that it is a BSA national
program. This may be the way National will attempt to solve this problem. Of
course I can not find the new letter right now, but will continue looking for
it and provide more details when I have the letter to read from.

Subject: Background Checks
I am having a problem, I would like to post to the wisdom of the list.
In the past our CR (also IH), The fire chief sent adult leader apps. to the
police department for background checks. Recently he has been advised that
this is no longer allowed by the National Crime Computer people. I work
part time for state police, so I know that this is true.
He has refused to sign off leader apps, being concerned about the liability
he encurrs without being able to run criminal history checks.
My DE has suggested that we go to an outside source to run security checks.
This could cost upwards of $10.00 a shot. I do not see how we can ask a
parent who is already being asked to pay for registration, to pay for the
security check. And I am not sure the Pack and troop can afford it.
PLEASE!!!!!! Tell me what your procedures are for background checks on
