Well...being the mom of a high maintenance child, I've got a bit of
experience with this.
I have a boy who is now nine years old. He is a very bright boy. But he
is also full of fear. He is afraid to fall while riding a bike, so he has
yet to learn how to ride. He is afraid of drowning, so he doesn't swim.
He is afraid of performing in front of others. So, this normally, bouncy,
rambunctious boy is almost invisible when put on stage in front of others.
It would serve no purpose to force him to participate in something he does
not want to, for the sake of tradition or anything else. He is 75 lbs and
pure muscle. Scouting is one of the few things he likes to do. And, he
can do it well...he can memorize anything, and he's a badge hunter. He
loves getting new patches, badges, loops, pins anything to decorate his
uniform. (His dad is in the army, I think this might be inherited.)
