Our troop adults have occasionally discussed hazing. There is a risk in
not having a few rules in place. because sometimes hazing is tough to
spot when it starts; "we were just having fun."
About a year, on Scouts-L, I thought, I saw a list of rules about Scout
skits that I thought applied very well to hazing. The three rules were:
No sexual content
No body functions
ONLY an adult can be embrassed, , and then only with prior
approval from that adult. No youth can be embarassed.
These rules, particularly the last one, should cover any hazing plans.
Inform the Scouts, before every trip, and before every skit, that
activities and skits require adult approval and adult observers.
One more note: We have just begun to teach that a joke is funny once;
tolerated twice, and just not very funny a third time. Some Scouts,
particularly younger ones, find this concept difficult; but when a youth
has been the butt of some event, this message helps to reduce the
I would be interested, privately, in input from others as to whether this
set of rules is considered to be compelete, or excessive.
