This is indeed the case, unfortunately. I have a friend who was asked to
leave his church because of his involvement in Scouting; very traumatic for
the family. That particular denomination has its own program (Pioneers)
which bears a striking resemblence to Scouting.
Some years ago I asked a friend to be a merit badge counselor. She said yes
but changed her mind a couple of days later. She's a Wisconsin Synod
Lutheran who was a Girl Scout back in the 20s. Her pastor got in some sort
of trouble for confirming her when he knew of her involvement in Scouting.
My impression is that the national denomination does not permit Scouting but
that some local pastors will not make an issue of it unless it is brought to
their attention. A lot depends on how strict the pastor wants to be.
