We have used burlap wrapped around a staff, then chicken wire wrapped around the burlap,
soaked in kerosene. Less flaking, and lasts a little longer.
Also, for ground torches, try a soda can filled part way with kerosene. Roll a couple
of paper towels tightly and tie with thread so you have a roll about 6 inches long.
This is the wick - stick into the hole in the can. (Punch a second hole in the top of
the can to allow air flow.) Extinguish by covering with a #10 can to smother.
