Our two crews returned from Philmont last month and had a great time.
Although this is the seventh time we have sent a contingent since 1980, it
was our first trek since 1997, and so this was a first-time experience for
all the boys who went.
I learned two things while there that bothered me a great deal, but I did
not want to share them with the list until I had time to reflect. I would
now like your comments on the following:
1. We asked when we could apply for a trek for 1999. We were told that
1999 would not be opened for applications - that 1998 applicants were given
the option of applying for two years in advance, and that 1999 is already
full. The official said "We didn't intend for that to happen, but it did."
Why was the application process opened this far in advance without giving
all troops the opportunity to apply?
2. We saw three crews of 4-H kids go on the trail the same day we did. If
Philmont can't accommodate all the Scouts that want to go, then why are we
opening up the Ranch to outside groups? (That question comes verbatim from
one of our Scouts.)
