They announced to us in the advisors' meeting this summer at Philmont that
all Troop contingent spots for 1998 were filled and that they had begun
making tentative reservations for 1999. However, there are other
opportunities for you to check out. Your council may have made a
reservation for a council contingent that may have a place for your troop.
It is my understanding that you should be able to keep your group together
as one of the crews in a council contingent, (and let them worry about
transportation, organization, etc.) Check with them. Also, there is a
program for older boys called Trail Crew. The Trail Crew scout works on the
Philmont trails for two weeks and then gets a free Philmont trek following
They age requirement for Philmont is : Scout must be 14 by 1/1/9X of year
of the trek OR have completed the 8th grade. Philmont is tough and is
better appreciated by older scouts.
See thus URL for a good list of Philmont stories. The page is labeled
"This is Selden's partial list of Web pages which describe Philmont Scout
Ranch, as well as some other hiking and Scouting topics. It was started
when a friend going to Philmont asked for some pointers to Web pages
describing others' experiences there."
My thanks go to the author, Seldon, of the list because our troop enjoyed
reading about Philmont adventure in advance of our trip.
