Clayton (and others considering a Philmont trek for 1998):
Before you call Philmont, call your council office. Many councils
have large blocks of reservations, and may have openings that you
can fill. They could also put you in touch with other local troops
who have reservations and may have openings.
If they don't have a reservation, the telephone number for Philmont
is (505) 376-2281. It's not likely that you'll be able to get a
reservation at this point, though. Reservations for 1999 will open
sometime around April 1, 1998.
The minimum for participation at Philmont in 1998 is 14 by
January 1, 1998, OR completion of the eighth grade before arrival.
Philmont is a great trip. Several local troops plan their own
backpacking trips in the area, but I think they miss out on the
special program activities that make Philmont unique. It's not just a
place to hike, it's filled with staffed camps that specialize in a
variety of high-adventure activities such as rock climbing, mountain
biking, western lore, archaeology, interpretive history, 30.06
shooting, and much, much more.
