In the 6 months I've been on the list, never have I gotten so much mail
from a posting. I stated that the best thing to use on a fire was lamp oil.
I am NOT talking about kerosene lamp oil. I am talking about the lamp oil
that has a paraffin base.
A lot of you have asked about gun powder and devices for starting a
campfire magically. First of all, let me say very strongly that anyone who
has never worked with gun powder, please get someone who has a lot of
experience with gun powder to help. Gunpowder is very dangerous. I have had
a lot of experience with it and even I have had a few "mishaps".
OK, as for starting a campfire ":magically" here are some tips:
1) a simple fire starter can be made out of a battery pack that holds 4 AA
bateries, a "push button" type double pole switch, 2 alligator clips, small
guage wire and some modle rocket igniters. Attatch the switch to the
battery pack with wire to one set of poles, then run wire from the other
poles( very long peices) and attatch the alligator clips to the ends.
Attatch the igniters to the alligator clips and there you have your magic
fire starter. The igniters go into your gun powder. works every time.
2) use smokless gunpowder for a flash, and black powder for smoke. Be VERY
CAREFUL with black powder. It will explode. A little will go a long way.
3)For a quick running line use a thin line of powder. For a slow moving
flame(very impressive) spread the line of powder out so that you have a
thick (width wise) line.
4)You can make flashpots by using tuna cans and putting a small amount of
smokeless powder in them to use indoors or out.
Again, I urge you to get someone who works with gunpowdwer to coach you
before you try anything. Pratice before you try it at a scout function. Any
other questions or coments please e-mail me privately. And for you scouts
out there on the list, make sure you have an adult with you before you try
any of this.
