The Den Chief is a Boy Scout or Explorer that assists the Den Leader and
Assistant Den Leader and the elected Denner to provide a good program for
There is *nothing* in any official BSA publications which says that Den
Chiefs must ONLY be male; on the contrary, several BSA publications,
starting with the Cub Scout Leader Book and the Den Chief Handbook, refer to
Den Chiefs as "Boy Scouts or Explorers" with no gender differences.
As an Explorer, I also served as a Den Chief.
Additionally, the BSA has not officially taken away the position called Den
Aide, which can be held by an female Explorer. Den Aides don't wear a cord,
don't even get a patch, but do the same thing (basically in urban and rural
areas) that Den Chiefs do in all places and locations.
The "appropriate recognitions" are the Den Chief emblem and cord (which is
only found in the Boy Scout section of the Insignia Guide) and the Den Chief
Service Cord, which again only appears in the Boy Scout section.
However, look on the next to the last page of the Den Chief Handbook and it
explains where the patch and cords are to be worn on the Boy Scout or
Den Aide, by the way, is NOT a registered position within the Pack and the
BSA has been trying to get Councils NOT to use it anymore due to insurance
liability reasons; but many Councils still use and recognize Den Aides only
because there *seems to be* a shortage of male Den Chiefs.
Hope that helps out, Vince!
