Mike's question about a training is appropriate.
Our troop uses a very similar program. We have a monthly meeting just for
the crews from Jan or Feb to May or June (we have an August trek). During
the fall, late winter and mid spring we have at least three two night
backpacking trips. The first is easiest to work on proper equipment fit,
then tougher trails later, hopefully. We also expect the Scouts to
continue to camp and participate with the regular program to keep their
over all skill level up to par. Summer camp intervenes for us so we ahve a
gap, then off to Philmont. Any time we can find a Saturday open, though,
we offer day hikes on shorter trails at nearby lakes, carrying packs,
breaking in boots, getting the crew used to hiking together, etc. Good
conditioning work too.
To start the whole process for next summer we ahve a meeting scheduled for
early September. AT that meeting we will cover long range calendar,
camping plans (1st backpack trip is in October), financial infor, and
conditioning needs. Stress the need for the kids to be involved in some
activity for conditioning, like spring soccer or track. Adults, get
walking now, using that stairmaster through the winter, jogging or running
from early spring all the way to departure date. It's tough out there for
us old goats.
I probably have some old meeting agendas from prior trips that I could
email if that would be helpful???
Hope this helps. Have a great trip.
