You and about 10 or 20 other Scouters, Mike!!! *heheeeee*
Chess indeed *is* one of the merit badge topics being "examined" this fall,
and it is the one receiving the most attention as in "Hey!! Why haven't we
thought of this earlier??" kind. So far, however, there has not been any
word (official or not) about the status of the merit badge.
Normally, when new merit badges are being tested, they are done so within
several local Councils that have been "certified" as "Quality Councils" by
the BSA over the past couple of years. That's part of their "prize" for
attaining that status....which also means that more attention is placed on
them by their Region and the National Office (that could be perceived by
some professionals as a "definate bad thing", bad in this case not meaning
good or great! *smiling*)
So, in order for your Troop to "test" the new merit badge, your Council
needs to be a Quality Council and *someone* within your Council needs to let
the National Boy Scout Committee know that your unit's interested in
field-testing the new merit badge if and when it's available for fieldtesting.
(you can be that *someone*, Mike; just write to the National Boy Scout
Program Committee at the National Office address, that's all).
Remember, while there is a possibility that they will allow your Council to
field test new items, the vast majority of the fieldtesting is done by those
few Councils that have achieved Quality Council status over a two or three
year period of time. In that way, the best Councils demonstrating a quality
program and support tests new things in the "optimal field condition".
Hope this helps out, Mike....I'm looking forward to that new Chess MB as
well, and hope that they use another piece other than the "horse" with the
design (my favorite is the rook, the "castle") *heheeheheheehe*
Man, to be a Scout again!
