Russ Jones suggests using a bed of onion slices as your first layer. Sounds
like a great idea. Probably ought to use same thing as the last layer so
you can turn it over!
But, we've had great luck using cabbage leaves. We often start with a
large one as the first layer and just wrap it over the top with the foil.
Works great until you have someone who thinks cabbage only comes in the
form of slaw and either shreds it at camp or buys it in a bag rather than
as a head. If it gets a little darker--read burned--most scouts are glad
to toss it aside!
