Stories about ADD/ADHD, behavior problems, and meds (withheld or not)
aside, I recall when I was on staff at Great Salt Lake Council's Camp
Steiner many years ago (1963?), we were just sitting down to dinner when
the outpost hikers supposed to be on an overnight at a nearby lake
returned. One of the scouts had gone into convulsions. So we grabbed the
stokes litter and ran up and over the mountain. (Camp Steiner is located
at 10,200ft in Unita Mtns, everything else around is higher or much
higher!) We met the hike leader coming up the far side carrying the boy
piggyback, stabilized by 2 other scouts.
We evacuated him speedily back to camp and then by car back to SLC that
night. We later learned that he had had open chest surgery 4 weeks before,
and his parents had specifically left this info OFF his medical form
because "they didn't want his camp activities to be restricted". Talk
