Including the 5 sets of plans that I intend to mail out today, the
running total of sets of plans for making a Newtonian reflector
telescope with a Dobsonian mounting stands at 88.
If anybody else is interested in receiving a set of these plans,
please e-mail me with your postal mailing address.
I shall post a list of those to whom I have sent plans on Friday.
I suggest that some of you team up. For example, several people
live in the same city (e.g., Houston, TX and Chippewa Falls, MN).
Likewise, some of you probably live in cities that are not all that
far apart. Mutual support will help you surmount any difficulties
you may encounter in building these telescopes.
For the California crowd, all of you except for Donald Wells in
Daly City, seem to live within driving distance of Burbank. The
Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers will hold their next telescope
building class in October. I suggest that you get in contact with
them and place a lens blank on order.
I'll most likely see you there, as I am now starting to make 4
8" telescopes for use at our council summer camp next year. The
two telescopes I placed up at Camp Three Falls this year proved
to be wildly popular. The decision has been made to make a separate
program area for astronomy merit badge. With 6 or 7 telescopes and
a few sets of binoculars on tripods, we'll have the equipment to
run an excellent astronomy program.
Good luck, and good hunting!
Yours in Scouting,
