Hardware woes - Any helpful hints?

For the techies, how can I keep excess dust and SPIDERS! out of my Tower?
I'm set up in the basement near our wood burning furnace. It's a cool 60
degrees most of the time (the plus), quieter and I have more room.
Colorado is pretty dusty so even upstairs dust and spiders could be a
problem. Could I put a piece of that thin craft sponge over the fan to
filter the crud without inhibiting the air flow to the hardware?
Last week, my hard drive crashed for no apparent reason other than
possibly the above. It's good to be back. CD-ROM apparently wasn't
playing music as well and I didn't know it. The good news was that it was
all under warranty.
