To practice for our cub family camping I made the ziplock ice cream with
daycare kids. It DID leak, from the corners of the bag, NOT the opposite
end where the ziplock part is. The cheap ones (even though it is name
brand) can not stand up to the tossing. The kids then got sugar and milk
on their legs which attracted bugs (and caused the little girls to whine).
Fingers did get cold and some of the kids stopped doing it and never had
"ice" cream, more like soup (it was 95 degrees out). They said they had
fun and several kids asked for the recipe. I offered a spoonful of
Hersheys Chocolate syrup as an alternative to vanilla. This made an extra
mess, I don't recommend it.
BIG HINT: look for vanilla with the lowest percentage alcohol. It is more
expensive but I think it tastes better in ice cream. I found 11% alcohol
content, and used 50% more than the recipe called for. It was great. 30
to 35% alcohol is normal.
I look forward to trying coffee can ice cream at the campout. I think it
will be an improvement.
