Yes, there are still five ranks on the Trail to Eagle but there are no
"tenure" requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class.
This changed in 1989 when the BSA made a significant change to the
advancment program. But it still takes about six months for even a
"rapid mover" to earn the first three ranks. One reason is because he
must go camping at least three times.
For Star, the boy must serve 4 months as a First Class Scout. For Life,
6 months as a Star Scout. For Eagle, another 6 months as a Life Scout.
So, a boy can make Eagle before turning 13. We've had 3 (out of 60)
Eagles that did this.
The youngest was exactly age 12 1/2. He's an extremely goal oriented
boy who (now almost 15 with a Philmont trek under his belt) aspires to
attend the U.S. Naval Academy.
Our shortest "Trail to Eagle" has been 25 months. These two included
the 12 1/2 year old plus a 13 year old boy who wound up as the
valedictorian of his high school class in 1993. He's now in his 4th
year (in a 5 year plan) in a special program at the University of Texas
leading to a degree in architecure.
Currently, we have an 11 year old Scout who also has an opportunity to
be an Eagle at age 12. He holds the Life Rank, needs one required MB
Safety) plus his Eagle Service Project. He will be attending his 3rd
summer camp next week. He just attended his first Order of the Arrow
conclave. Again...another very "goal" oriented boy.
