Thanks to all who responded to my questions regarding parental
assistance with an Eagle project requiring library research.
Many of you asked what the nature of the project was, and whether
it had received district approval.
During past memorial day observances, Aaron was asked to assist
in placing temporary flag stands at the grave sites of veterans at the
local cemetery. In the course of doing this, he noticed that there were
several sites that he was given instructions to place these holders
at positions such as: 10' to the north of "John Smith", or next to fence
on second row. There are approximately 20 veterans graves that are
unmarked. After having discussed the situation with the local VFW, and
American Legion, he proposed getting the names of these veterans, and
applying to the Veterans Administration for government provided markers.
The cemetery superintendent and the county VA administrator suggested
that the county would provide the manpower and materials to install the
The project has received all the necessary approvals from the City, his
unit leader, the unit committee chairman, and the District and Council
advancement chairpersons. (chairpeople??)
The research requires attempting to verify the military records, and
death certificates for these individuals, and completing the necessary
applications to forward to the state and federal authorities requesting
plaques, and/or headstones. Hopefully, after receiving the markers,
he will coordinate the installation with the cemetery superintendent
and his staff.
Initial research indicates that most of the 20 are Civil War veterans,
and obviously pre-date computerized records at the city and county level.
What I find interesting, is that although they are buried here in
Michigan, many of the veterans entered the war from other states,
making the records sketchy at best.
Again thanks to all who responded, and I will take all your suggestions
