I tried to OCR/scan this tonight to save me a few strokes; my scanner's
not wanting to scan anything (not enough memory or stupid thing needs to
have our cat to sit on it for a while or something...).
One of the current discussions has been about the Eagle Board of Review.
Here's a copy of a letter I sent to a Life Scout wanting to know what to
expect during the Eagle Board and any "advice" I could give him. I'm really
curious to know how WannabeDr@aol.com did during his Eagle Board of Review.....
Some of the advice could be used by Eagle Boards today, four years later.
(From posting dated 95-05-04; Subject Eagle Board of Review)
This will come almost a little too late, but I offer my congrats to you as
you become a new Eagle in your Troop.
Thanks for the kind words about the EagleTips...there's a Eagletip which
covers what goes on during a Eagle Board of Review. Here's some excerpts
You need to be in as complete a uniform as possible when you get there.
Because these folks may have NEVER met you before, your personal appearance
will be important to them as well as yourself.
Review the things you were taught in your Scout Handbook. Think about the
merit badges you've earned and what you've learned from each of them. They
will ask you about what you've learned but they WON'T ask you stupid stuff
like "what's the first requirement in the Emergency Prepardness Merit
Badge?" (it's the earn the First Aid merit badge, by the way). What they
want to know is how your have planned to use the skills you've learned in
your Troop, and how you plan to build a career around the merit badges
you've earned and why *those* merit badges you chose instead of the others.
You need to consciously think about the Motto, Slogan, Law and Oath mean to
YOU...not what "the book says", Joe. This is also really important...they
will ask you how you've placed the Scout "rules" into motion in your own
personal life. Don't LIE!!! They caught me once during my Eagle Board and
it was somewhat embarrassing for me to tell them that I've never skipped
school when they have a statement from the school that said that I've
skipped school twice!! And YES, they WILL ask your school prinicipal,
church leaders, and others before you appear (like your neighbors for
instance...I had two neighbors that sent really nice recommendations to the
Board, one in which told on me that after school, I took care of their
children until they arrived from home late for no money (which kinda
embarrassed me more when they asked "why didn't you charge them", and I
remarked that "I love kids and since I didn't have to do anything else, I
So don't be surprised if they did some "detective work" AHEAD of the Board.
They also knew that I had a girlfriend, and even asked Belinda about me!!
Good thing we had just had a date before the Board *heehehee*
Finally, BE YOURSELF. They want to know if you are the same Scout that your
Scoutmaster recommended to them about. Don't come in cocky or with your nose
so high in the air that they can see up your nose!! At the same time, show
them that you are confident that your WANT to be an Eagle Scout...not
because it would be important to your Troop or to your parents...but because
it would be important to YOU (it IS, isn't it?). Joe, many of the members
of the Eagle Boards can tell if you're nervous about being there, or if
you're just "going through the motions". Don't go through the
motions...tell them YOUR Scouting story!!
You'll be there for about an hour and a half. Don't worry if they get you
out shortly after one hour....or if they keep you until almost the two hour
Let me know how your Eagle Board went, Joe, and tell me please when your
Eagle Court of Honor is scheduled....I've been known to max out credit cards
and spend money I don't have to go to an Eagle Court of Honor if I can do it
and "live afterwards"!!
