Waterworld incident - Scoutmaster's Minute

The location of the recent incident where the water slide collapsed,
killing one teenager and injuring more than 30 others, is in our council,
actually a only a few blocks from our service center. Napa High School
is also in our council, and I believe there will be several students
from the school in our Jamboree contingents (one in Troop 637). So
it is quite close to home.
I thought about what kind of message I could bring to our Scouts
about that accident, but couldn't come up with anything last week.
The Napa High seniors graduated this afternoon. After watching my
son and 3 other Troop 24 Scouts graduate from Berkeley High this
afternoon, and stopping by the Troop meeting afterwards where the
Troop Instructor went over the equipment list for a backpack trip,
I finally put it together into a Scoutmaster's minute. I just
received a compliment from one of my ASMs on it, so I thought I
would share it with you:
"I am sure that most of you are aware of the accident that happened
last week at Waterworld. Now in Scouting, we believe in having fun,
and I am sure those kids last week thought it would be fun to pack
that slide. But we have a motto as well, Be Prepared. That doesn't
mean just remember to bring what you need to camp. It also means be
prepared up here, in your mind. To think about the things you are
about to do. What can I do to be prepared for what might happen.
Being prepared mentally means remembering to bring raingear and
remembering to do things safely. Take it with you wherever you go,
whatever you do."
