LOS ANGELES, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron Burkle, managing Partner of
The Yucaipa Companies and Chairman of the Board of Ralphs Grocery
Company, has been selected to receive the Boy Scouts of America, Los
Angeles Area Council's 1997 Jimmy Stewart ``Good Turn'' Award. Burkle
will be honored for his community service and support of the Boy
Scouts at a tribute dinner on June 3 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los
The race-themed gala, ``A Grand Prix Affair,'' will net more than
three quarters of a million dollars, making it the largest
fund-raising dinner in the history of the Boy Scouts of America.
Proceeds from the event will benefit much-needed Scouting programs in
inner-city Los Angeles neighborhoods. These specially designed
programs offer constructive alternatives to the gang activity, drug
abuse, violence and antisocial behavior that plague the Los Angeles
inner city environment.
Tony Ressler, Managing Principal of Apollo Advisors, LP, will serve as
the evening's honorary dinner chairman with acclaimed actor Edward
James Olmos as master of ceremonies and the Reverend Cecil Murray of
Los Angeles' First A.M.E. Church will deliver the invocation. The
Original Four Tops will provide the evening's entertainment.
The recipient, Ron Burkle, began his career in the supermarket
industry at the age of 13 working in a neighborhood grocery store in
San Bernardino. That same year, he made his first stock transaction.
He founded The Yucaipa Companies, a private investment firm, in 1987.
Since then, the company has completed more than 15 successful
acquisitions in the supermarket industry. Today, Yucaipa is one of the
nation's largest holders of supermarket companies.
In addition to a successful career, Burkle has built an impressive
record of social and community responsibility. His generous work on
behalf of numerous charitable and community service organizations
includes Chairman of the Board of D.A.R.E., member of the Board of
Trustees for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Board of Governors for
The Music Center of Los Angeles County, and Board of Advisors of
Project Angel Food.
Burkle also founded The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation in 1991, a
nonprofit organization that annually grants millions of dollars to
community-service organizations throughout Southern California. He
currently serves as chairman of The Foundation's Board of Trustees. In
a joint contribution with The Foundation, Burkle recently pledged $15
million to the Disney Concert Hall project in Los Angeles.
