John, I agree with you. I believe that one of the keys to advancement
for the older boys is COMMUNICATIONS. Encouragement by the SM & ASM's &
CM's goes a long way to show the lads that someone is truly concerned
about them. The oldest troop in our Dist. (Stevens), also with the
longest serving SM (26 yrs), just had their 1st Eagle in four years. The
troop has 6 1st Class's with over 5 yrs in grade, & a couple Stars with
about 3 yrs in grade. The SM does not go out of his way to encourage the
older boys. The sad thing about that troop is that the Dist. Advancement
Chair is the ASM & his belief is that if the boy wants to advance, he'll
do it on his on. I do not agree with him-I believe the Scouts need the
adult leadership to prod them along-then encourage them as they stumble
on-ward & up-ward. These youngmen must be taught how much that Eagle
will assist them in the REAL world.
I think that if it is not possible for a lad to get in his leadership
time, to remember that the SM can have him do a special project. It's
all in the requirements.
