I would second the Explorer, although if you're getting four doors and
4-wheel drive it'll probably be above the ranges you're looking for.
I've found that I can fill it with four boys plus their, and my, loaded
backpacks if you get creative in the loading process. The 4-wheel drive
drove me and the above load out of a washed-out Sandwich Notch Rd (an
interesting weekend backpacking trip I save for story-telling around the
fire) so I can vouch for its usefulness.
When shopping for vehicles, I felt that none of the other SUV's could
match the cargo space. Cherokees put that darn spare tire in the back.
Other thoughts - The four-door Expedition or Tahoe/Yukon, although these
start way over your price range. Used Suburbans are much easier to come
by and can't be beat for towing, hauling, and cargo space. And then
there's my dream truck: a Dodge RAM 2500, 4X4, extended cab, Cummins
diesel, short bed with a cap. Maybe some year...
