On the 20th May I posted these Australian Scouting trivia questions and said
I would provide the answers in 10 days. Here are the questions again,
followed by some answers I received and the correct answers:
1) What is the highest award that may be earned by a youth member in
Australian scouting? What is the maximum age for earning this award?
A couple of people suggested the Queen's Scout award. This is a common
misconception. The Queen's Scout award is the highest award available in the
Venturer section, and is generally the award that receives most recognition
in the general community. However, technically the highest award that may be
earned is the Baden-Powell award which is earned in the Rover section
between the ages of 18 and 25
2) Who is the current Chief Scout of Australia? What interesting
feature distinguishes him from his predecessor in his non-scouting role?
No, not Crocodile Dundee. The Chief Scout is His Excellency the Honourable
Sir William Deane AC KBE, who is also the Governor-General of Australia (for
those not familiar with Australian government, the role of state governor or
national governor-general is a vice-regal position acting as the
representative of the queen. In practical terms the functions are largely
ceremonial, although there are certain powers that can be exercised if
occasion warrants it.) It has been traditional for the governor-general to
be offered the position of Chief Scout. Sir William Deane's predecessor,
Bill Haydn is an athiest and therefore would not accept the position of
Chief Scout as he could not make the scout promise.
3) What is the official title for the style and colour of the official
Australian Scout uniform hat?
>From the early days of scouting the "lemon squeezer" or "Smokey the bear"
style hats were used. Cubs wore a bottle green cap with yellow piping. In
1972 a beret was introduced as optional alternative headgear for scouts,
venturers and scouters (bottle green for scouts and scouters, maroon for
venturers). In 1993 a new style of uniform was introduced. Among the
changes, the hat, cap and berets were all superceded by the "Johnson" style
hat (the shape is roughly like Crocodile Dundee's hat with a plaited leather
hat band) According to "Policy and Rules" the colour is "moss green" with a
tan leather band for land scouts, navy blue with white band for sea scouts
and navy blue with tan band for air scouts.
4) What three anniversaries were celebrated in Australian scouting last
5 years of Joey Scouts, 50 Years of Senior Scouts/Venturers and 80 years of
