Help wanted: Den Chiefs apply within

Yet again, I turn to the millenium of Scouting experience represented here
My dilemma this time is Den Chiefs for the pack: I'm trying to get our
companion Troop to supply them. Spoke with the SM at tonight's meeting re:
same. After the blank & shocked stare I got (I know, don't get me started
about this guy), he remarked that he'd get back with me at the next meeting.
No problem, the need's not critical- I can wait another week. To my
knowledge, the pack hasn't had den chiefs in a long time and I'd like to get
us going in the right direction.
There's this one Scout working on his 2nd Class- very conscientious, always
volunteering to help me at Pack meetings & such. Mentioned our need to him
in passing and showed him the job requirements in the Cub Leader Book. He
read it and started to get enthused. Unit Commissioner came over and said
that the Scout was needed at the Boy Scout meeting and therefore couldn't be
Den Chief while the troop was meeting (aha, the problem in a nutshell: the
Troop & some dens meet at the same time, Monday @ 7:00 p.m.) . Option was
mentioned about moving the conflicting den meetings to another day (not sure
if the Den Leaders or parents/kids would like that) and the Scout said that
transportation might be a problem on any other day.
Got a feeling that the SM will claim that this same problem will prohibit
any Scout from our companion troop from Den Chief duty. If that's the case,
I could play dirty pool and solicit Den Chiefs from another Troop, but I
won't. Troop/pack relations are headed in a pretty darned good direction
right now & I want to keep 'em that way (We share the same Chartered Org.
and the COR is the ASM).
I feel that the Den Chief program is vital to the continued success of the
Pack (&, BTW, of his Troop as well). I feel the best route is to take it to
the Troop Committee, if the SM shoots it down. Or better yet, make sure that
the SM & me have our discussion before the Committee.
How would y'all handle this hot tater?
