This past weekend our troop (4 adults and 7 boys) camped at Gettysburg and
did some historical site-seeing.
First off, I would like to thank Cheryl Singhal for sending me the information
in the mail about the trail... Also I'd like to thank all those who also
sent little tidbits of information.
We went there this past weekend. Although the forecast was for Thunder
Storms... we really lucked out... Saturday was a beautiful, sunny, warm
day and Sunday was equally warm, but a little more over cast... BUT none
of that liquid sunshine..yeeehaa... Would have put a strain on the weekend
We did all the requirements for the Gettysburg Heritage Trail Patch provided
by the York/Adams Council... We were a bit rushed with just the weekend
to visit and do so much... One could easily spend a week there.
We stayed at the 'Gettysburg Campground' which was about 3 miles outside
of Gettysburg. It was an educational weekend and as expected not all
of it was very exciting for the boys, however answering all the questions
in the Trail Guide helped them to keep interested and when there wasn't a
question at a particular monument or spot, we'd make one up - Like
what is the height of General Sedgwick's monument from Base to Hat...
or what is the distance the Soldiers marched across this open meadow ... etc
It was a long weekend, but well worth the trip. Met other scouts from
our council - small world!!!
Anyway, I would recommend this to those troops (even Packs) looking for
a nice weekend.
Thanks again Cheryl,
P.S. We even found our County's monument (Dutchess County Regiment Monument, its
on the 'Johnny Reb Trail' ...
