I've been lurkig for a while, even posted a couple of times; but now I
need the help of the collective wisdom of all you electronic assistants.
In addition to working with my Troop and Pack, I also serve as our
District Activities Chairman (yea, I know...too many hats, tell me
something new!). On a good day the Crittenden District has three "active"
Troops and *maybe* eight "active" Packs, Explorer Posts seem to change
daily and I can't keep count. Most of these units run a fairly good Scout
program - of course some are stronger than others - but there are several
"dead" units and units with a VERY high inactie ratio and adult leadership
that is pushed to the limit. We're "Doing our best" to correct these
situations - reorganizing the District Committee, recruiting a District
Commissioner and staff and generally attempting to breath life back into
Recently I suggested (there's my first mistake) that since we had not had
a good district camporee or
Webelos encampment in a couple of years (we've combined with another
dist.) we should plan to have a district wide Boy Scout and Cub Scout
event this fall. The idea is to bring as many Scouts and Scouters
together with lots of fun and exciting activities, ideas and resources for
leaders, more fun and games, invite the public to visit for a some much
needed PR and generally show everyone how much fun Scouting can be!
Sounds simple dosen't it - well not really, in this district unit leaders
claim to have their hands full just working with their unit (I personally
don't buy this line, check my hats). Several have expressed interest in
coming to such an event but are not willing to offer any help. Of course
like it is everywhere, I suggested the idea and am now the Program
Chairperson, actually I volunteered [seems I can only spell "no" as
"know"!]. With ten years as a Scouter and having grown up in Scouting in
the District I'm seen as one of the "old-timers" (compared to many of
you I'm still green, but we don't have any 20+ year vets active in the
District) who people think has all the answers (most of them don't know
that my answers come from this list).
Now for the help I need - - I'm looking for some "tried & true" Scouting
activities for Cubs and/or Boy Scouts that don't take a lot of Scouting
knowledge to run. I'll probably have a handfull of district volunteers
and other friends that we can draft (i'd like to keep them as friends and
not ex-friends after this is all over); most of these will be parents
without Scout Leader training or experience so I need some activities with
rather simple instructions that they can follow. Over the years I have
worked on several camporee staffs, council events, encampments, traning
events and directed a District Merit Badge University, plus I am
certifeid as a Day Camp Director through National Camp School; however,
all of these activities assume that you have fairly active Scouts and
Scouters as your audience - for this event many of the participants will
be non-socuts (potential recruits) or Scouts from inactive programs and
Scouters who need encouragement in their programs.
This event will be held in a very nice city park and sports complex here
in West Memphis, we have access to a stocked lake (for some type of
fishing activity on Saturday), tennis courts, beach volley ball court,
ball fields, restrooms, large camping area and good conections with the
City Parks Commission. I'll be looking through some of my old materials;
but would appreciate any ideas you guys may have. Oh yea, here's the
kicker - "they" want to have this event in the middle of August - not any
time to waste, especially with summer camp and day camp coming up soon.
Thanks in advance for your help - you can respond privately to
"email@example.com" or post to the list if you have something for
John T. Peeples, Scoutmaster Troop / Pack 231 plus all that other stuff.
