Last Wednesday's Miami Herald ran a four column op-ed piece (on the
editorial page) written by Benjamin J. Stein of Los Angeles. The article
is copyrighted by the Wall Street Journal and will not be reprinted
Seems Mr. Stein (described as an actor, writer and law teacher) is the
father of a nine year-old who has just joined Scouting as a Webelos.
Apparently becoming a Webelos has changed the boys life (or at least his

general, and exceedingly complimentary of what he calls "The Magic of
Scouting". In fact, the banner above the article reads: "The magic of
Scouting brings out the best in this child." That miracle is what he
credits with fostering such new qualities in his son as leadership,
responsibility, sharing, and the confidence to talk to adults (among
Those of us who have been in Scouting for a while have seen evidence of
this on innumerable occasions. It's not a secret. I don't even think
it's that unusual to see such behavior modification in those boys
committed to their goals. It IS, however, really nice to see major play
given to an article that is so positive about the program...and WITHOUT
some snide sidebar about gun-totin' Scout pros.
