When our Pack graduates in May we present our "soon-to-be 2nd year" Webelos
with a hiking staff. The boys are always looking forward to the final
transition year and eagerly awaiting becoming Boy Scouts and the staff
keeps the emphasis on the outdoor side of Scouting. We give them a little
story that highlights the significance of the staff and how it relates to
their Scouting journey.
Just before the previous 2nd year Webelos crossed over into Boy Scouts
in February, we "transferred" the boy leadership role to the "soon-to-be"
group (using the rope ceremony found through USSSP), so they already
realize they are "special." After they are presented with their staffs,
we have them help with the graduation of the younger Scouts by being the
ones to present the neckerchiefs.
