Why does Jere need a gun?

I spoke to a professional of my acquaintance about this issue. My question
was, "Regardless of the legality of this particular situation, why would
Jere be carrying around a loaded gun?"
Apparently it has nothing to do with the fact that he was in Miami. I was
told that Jere gets many, many death threats every week, and that his office is
I don't want to start a discussion about whether or not carrying a gun is
a good self-defense strategy, or about the legality of the situation. However,
it does make what seems to be an apparently unbelievable laspe of judgement
a bit more understandable. You may not think that carrying a gun is a great
way to deal with death threats; I'm not sure that I do either. However, it's
not you or me who's getting them. Don't say how you'd react until you've
been there. It's not like Jere has got the Secret Service covering his butt.
