But there was a statement. The follow up wire story indicated a quote from
JR to the effect that "I just forgot it was there." Thus, essentially, an
admission that the wire service story was accurate.
As to asking the DE's to get the truth, the one statement attributed on this
list to a DE indicated an explanation far different from the one attributed
to JR. The alleged explanation given to that group of volunteers went
further to indicate death threats, etc. JR's statement included no such
references, if reported properly. So, either JR neglected to mention that
he carried the weapon due to death threats, the AP chose not to print that
part, or someone is trying to do damage control by creating a more
believable story. Hmmm.
