I want to voice on the side of caution that the whole story has not yet
Jere Ratcliffe is not an absent minded person, and is KEENLY aware of the
scrutiny to which he is held. I know and have worked with Jere in the past,
and can tell you that I am completely shocked (and a bit skeptical) on two
accounts: (1) why he would have a LOADED handgun in the first place, and
(2) why he would be so absent minded as to run it through the X-Ray
machines at an airport.
However, there are several possible directions that this story could
unfold. I personally find it curious that no Press articles include a quote
from Jere, and am usually skeptical of early media coverage that is this
Two of the most unfortunate events to follow his arrest:
(1) with all the good press that BSA has been getting the last couple of
days (re: 200 million volunteer hours), you can bet that this sideline
story will now also be attached to the story.
(2) The BSA office dropped the ball big time with their only official (?)
response so far coming from Scott Tear, Ratcliffe's administrative
assistant: "I do know [Ratcliffe] is on the road, but I don't know where he
is," Tear said. "I've only been in this position for a few days and don't
know if he usually carries a firearm. I don't see any reason why he would."
