As a District Advancement Committee Member I have to reply
to this Subject Line. I'll appologize if I repeat someone
else or step on toes, but this has been a pet peave with me
for some time.
1. The 12th point of the Scout Law is "Reverent" not "Religious"
2. There is nothing in the Eagle App that 'requires' an
endorsement or recommendation from a religious
organization or person. There is a line for one if
appropriate, but no requirement that it be used. National
has never turned down an application in my experience that
lacked the religious reference.
3. It is very appropriate, however, to discuss the boys
understanding and interpretation of the 12th law. I've
sat on many BoR's where the boy was not a member of any
church, and a few had not been to a church in recent years
and never on a regular basis.
That is a matter for him and his parent(s)/guardian(s) to
decide. What is appropriate is his understanding of
"reverence"; his personal views of a higher guiding
principle; and most importantly his tolerance of others
beliefs and views.
