What Matters Most To Me
A Child's Plea to a Child Care Professional by Maryln Appelbaum, M.A.
Don't be afraid to be firm with me and to set rules. I
prefer it. It makes me feel safe and secure.
Don't tell me that I'm bad or that my behaviors are bad. It
makes me feel like I AM bad, and then I act that way even more. Instead,
tell me what you want and need from me.
Don't correct me in front of others if you can help it. It
makes me feel embarrassed.
Don't shout at me. I put up walls and can't hear you when
Don't expect the worst or even mediocre behavior. Expect
the best and I will strive to live up to it.
Don't be inconsistent. That confuses me and makes me keep
trying to do things I probably shouldn't do.
Don't expect me to do something you say, but that you yourself
don't do. Be a role model for me.
Don't let me take charge. I need you to trust and respect
and to rely on, and I can only do that if you will take charge.
Don't forget that I need you to believe in me and to love
me. I will thrive when you do.
Don't forget to tell me about all the nice things that I do.
It makes me want to do them more.
Don't forget to take care of your own needs. Then you will be
happier taking care of me.
Don't forget to listen to me, my fears, my hopes, my wishes.
That's a gift to me.
Don't give up on me. Keep believing in me.
