For young Scouts heading out to summer camp for the first time, I would
suggest looking into the camp and see if they have a program called the
"Rainbow Patrol". This is something our camp (Sand Hill) had, and was for
young Scouts to help them fulfillr equirements from Scout to First Class.
It was an excellent program and every graduate of the program got a
certificate. As far as merit badges to start on, I suggest any of the
handicraft badges. Basketry, Metalwork, Leatherwork, or Wood Carving.
Basketry seems to be the merit badge of choice. Heck, only 2
requirements. (last time I checked). Weave a basket and weave a seat for
Swimming is also a great badge to start with. Most young Scouts love to
swim, so this is only logical.
