Is good enough really *good enough*?

The whole scouting program is designed to promote excellence in boys (and
leaders). "Be Prepared" does not have any confining innuendos and "On My
Honor..." allows a boy to seek his highest self. As I have experienced it
the top end is always open and a boy may climb as high as is his dreams and
as far as his talents and abilities.
But there are of necessity mile posts that are driven solidly at certain
intervals along the way. When a boy passes one of those posts he has earned
his right to the recognition (even if he is only a wee bit past the post).
In my mind, we all ought to stand up and cheer every boy who passes even the
least of these mile posts. This way we let him know he's making progress,
he's doing okay, and we are proud of his efforts. Pat him on the back and
say, "Now do you see the next post up just a little bit further? You got
this one; and I know you can get the next one too! Let's go together, I'll
help you if I can!"
