The question of motivation has come up for discussion.
The kind of calls I hate to get as District Advancement Chairman:
[this is a rough transcript of a call just last night]
Candidate: I would like you to sign my project.
Me: Has your troop committee and Scoutmaster signed it?
Me: Ok, I can talk to you..... (dates)
Candidate: Uh... can it be right away? I turn 18 next Tuesday!
Me: Oh. OK, then bring it by tomorrow night (4/9). When are you
doing the work?
Candidate: This Friday and Saturday.
I had talked to this same candidate last November and he had done nothing
on the project since then. I was a bit frustrated.
Oh, well. Welcome to the real world.
Motivation #2. I was talking to my 14 year old son who last December had
7 merit badges and a project to do. I had been talking quite a bit about
tarketing a certain time to get Eagle, that he needed to choose a project
soon, that he needed to get moving on the MB's. ...
right - it had NO effect.
Dad: Wouldn't it be kind of neat to go to the Jamboree as an Eagle Scout?
Son: Is that possible?
Dad: Sure, you need 90 days for Personal Management. But the Jambo isn't
until the end of July. The other MB's will take some effort, too.
Since then he has done 5 merit badges (2 Citizenships, Safety, Cooking,
Environmental Science) and last night went to his first meeting with a
counselor for Personal Management. He has partially completed Aviation
so that one will finish up quickly. Last week we chose the project.
(I called the Township Clerk to get some ideas, and we checked one out
together.) HE decided that he wanted the Eagle before Jambo.
Motivation is a funny thing. Isn't it?
