Rod, I have two suggestions for hikes that we used to prepare for
Philmont last summer.
The Pinkney-Waterloo Recreation Areas (just west of AnnArbor)
have a number of trails that can be put together to form two-night
loops. There is a BSA trail that runs on part of it.
The Jordan River makes a nice weekend trip. It is near Alba, MI, southwest
I can get you more info on either of these.
Also, I suggest the book Backpacking in Michigan by Pat Allen and
If you were willing to go a bit farther, I would suggest the Bruce Trail in
Ontario. I has some very rugged and scenic sections.

You can find trails with rugged terrain and lots of up & down, but you
find anything around here that prepares you for the altitude and dry air at
Philmont. You should all be in tip-top physical condition (and have a
thorough medical exam). You will still find that most people take a couple
of days to adapt to altitudes like at Philmont.
That said - have a great trip. Philmont is an incredible experience.
You might check out our troop's web site at
and look at the notes from our trek in the High Adventure area.
