We really do need a good central repository of all Scouting related
websites and several of us have tried to get a handle on it. I've been
collecting website addresses for two years from this and other lists. As
time permits both Gary Hendra and I have been adding these websites and
others to a growing list available at
Since our last update in the summer I've accumulated nearly as many
addresses as we have listed. Together that gets into the thousands of URLs.
The U.S.Scouting Service Project throught he good offices of Chris Marsey
has also been hard at work trying to develop a good listing of available
websites related to Scouting. You can find our listing there at
Recently we've been talking back and forth about combining the resources
listed at the U.S.Scouting Service Project and the MacScouter websites
into a single database of Scouting related URLs that could be accessed
with a search engine similar to the ones you use for general web
searches. Likewise we are thinking about a way for Scouting webmasters to
add their new websites to the database in the same way you would for any
other web search engine.
This would allow the database to be realtime and not dependent on
somebody like me to get around to an update. (I'm guilty of being behind).
Imagine being able to type in a search string like "eagle ceremonies" and
find a dozen websites with related information or "Troop Anytown" and get
a listing of Troops in your area with websites.
Once we get this up and running we'll need all the help we can get from
folks that already have collections of URLs to add them into the
database, like those at the Troop 12, Troop 24, PineTreeWeb, and other
websites with wonderful collections of URLs.
This will be a great opportunity for the Scouting on the Web community to
have a single large searchable index of web resources for Scouting.
Just shows what a few Scouters can do linked by the interent, who haven't
had much chance to meet in person. ;-)
Mark and others who might be willing to help, I know of some areas where
help would certainly be appreciated. If you would be willing to help in
this venture and wouldn't mind an extra hour a week ;-), send me an
e-mail and let me talk with you about some ideas for really making this a
great Scouting resources.
