I decided to post my reply to Bruce to the whole list for the benefit of any
others who are looking for scouting newsgroups.

First warning - this problem IMO seems to be even worse on the Rec.Scouting
groups I describe below...
You've probably already had a dozen people tell you about the rec.scouting
groups. Just thought I'd include my comments:
Good general scouting issues discussion. Some non-BSA members of the
newsgroup can be a bit outspoken when issues that relate only to BSA are
raised there by newbies, but generally it's about the best group of them all IMO
Good discussion of BSA topics; tends to be dominated by OA and Eagle issues.
Sometimes gets bogged down in 3G discussions that really don't belong there
now that R.S.Issues is available, but some people just don't seem to learn.
In case you don't know, 3G is the common Rec.Scouting abbreviation for the
common controversial topics in BSA - Gays, God (i.e. removing religious
element from scouting), and Girls
Home of 3G and flame wars. Occasionally there will be something useful, but
most of the time you'll have to get through a lot of rubbish to find it. The
best thing to use in reading this group is a news reader that can exclude
messages based on key words etc. Check it out for a week or so and by then
you'll have a pretty good idea of what I mean and what key words in subject
lines are indications of posts that are best to not waste time reading.
The lowest volume discussion of all the groups. As the name suggests, the
group is devoted to Girl Scouts/Girl Guides, but sometimes a topic will be
discussed that has more general use in Boy Scouts.
General notes - often a message will be cross-posted to more that one
groups, so you will often get a sense of deja-vu while reading them. As is
often the case on Usenet, it is not uncommon for totally unrelated rubbish
to be posted by people who seem to have no better use for their time than to
post irrelevant messages to dozens of unrelated newsgroups - I have learned
to be quick with the delete button... There are other more specific groups
such as UK.Rec.Scouting, but not all servers include these groups so you may
not be able to access them (I can't...)
And you'll probably still meet many of the scouts-l community on the
