Take a look on the net at 'tablature' (try searching for tablature). I
know little about it, but a kid in school tells me it is a text method
of giving a tune for a guitar. I may have misunderstood, but if so, this
could be a very fast download method to show tunes on screen, since you
could show it as text rather than scanning it.
I would personally still prefer a method of hearing the music though -
and I'll bet that someone will develop a plug-in sometime which can play
sheet music. Also, doesn't real-audio now allow you to play sound *as
you receive it* so that you don't have to wait for long at all before
the sound starts to play? This could be a good solution for now.
I guess I'd prefer a real-audio type solution, because then you can hear
the emphasis, pauses and fun moments in a song which sheet music could
never easily portray.
This really would be a brilliant resource, and I bet that a lot of
readers would be willing to record their favourite song in a way that it
can be clearly heard, and contribute to the site. Certainly I would.
