I also own a Whisperlyte and have been using it off and on for 6 years.
The only trick to using it is, after pumping it up, turn it on until you
get a small amount of fuel in the bottom, turn it off and light it.
When the flame dies down turn it back on. I have had a small flame
thrower before but that was prior to learning how to properly use it.
Other than that, I haven't had any problems with it.
