Well it would seem he at least took to heart that a scout is Brave,
since our paper had a quote from the mother to the effect that James
is afraid of heights, but climbed up the 120-foot-tall tower to try to
coax his brother back down.
As for the comment about the fact that the BSA seems to encourage
violation of the "rule" that a rescuer should not run the risk of making
themselves a victim, I think there is a fairly fine line between
selfless heroism and stupidity. There is always risk in any rescue,
and from a Christian perspective "noone has greater love than this, to
lay down one's life for one's friends." We also talk about those who
have made the "ultimate sacrifice" in times of war, etc, to protect
So I feel that there is certainly still room for those medals even
with current rescue practices.
