George Hutcheson asked about how to handle "Handyman" at roudtable in the
colder climates. Well first knock down a wall and drive the car into the
room ;-). But really I have brought a bicycle in instead and have them
check the air and change the tires, adjust the chains ect. Also a "drain
trap" set-up for them to take apart and put back together again. And to
make things fun bring in a couple of light fixtures and have them change
light bulbs, but with mittens on. (nice lead-in to a Ethics in action
piece as well).
As far as the intgrity of requirements, and parents, I have always
preached that in the Webelos program we are taking the signing off
requirements away from the parents and now putting onto the Activity
Badge councilers and the Webelos Leader. This is to transition to the
idea of older boys and Merit badge councilers signing off in Boy Scouts.
It's actually easier at this piont simply say this is the way the
program is suppose to work and except for when those parents are serving
as a councilor they are out of the advancen=ment approval loop.
